Lower your heating bills by improving your attic insulation

Attic insulation

In Gatineau, Ottawa and throughout the Outaouais region, CPO ISOLATION offers residential and commercial insulation services for attics and attic spacers (flat roofs).

We use blown cellulose as well as blown fiberglass to very effectively insulate your attic. As well, your ceilings will no longer be cold in winter or suffer from condensation. In summer, humidity and high heat will remain outside and your air-conditioning costs will be reduced.

Cellulose or fiberglass to insulate your attic?

Cellulose is an eco-friendly, non-toxic insulation that is composed of recycled newsprint (85%) and fire-retardant minerals (which protect against fire). As for fiberglass, it is made of recycled glass and silica sand. It is naturally incombustible.

Our team can insulate your uninsulated attic with either fiberglass or with cellulose, according to your preference.

Improving the existing attic insulation

If you want your attic insulation to perform better, our team can add blown fiberglass to existing fiberglass insulation, or add blown fiberglass to existing cellulose. We will ensure that every nook and cranny is filled with insulation so that no air infiltration can occur.

A single layer of insulating wool is not enough to insulate an attic well during the severe cold of December, January and February. Additional insulation thickness will achieve a higher thermal resistance R-value.

The more insulation thickness that is added to the attic floor, the more that the R-value increases and the more effective the insulation is. The R-value of blown cellulose increases by 3.7 per inch of added cellulose. In order to obtain a thermal resistance that is between R-40 and R-50 (the standard is R-41), it is necessary to blow between 12 and 15 inches of cellulose to reach a thickness of 11 to 14 inches once the insulation is packed.

For blown fiberglass, there is a R-value increase by 3 for each additional inch of insulation. In attics, fiberglass can be blown onto the ceiling until its thickness provides a value of R-70.

Why insulate your attic?

In winter, it’s expensive to heat a home or business. And as heat rises, a poorly insulated attic will make heating costs climb. Close to 30% of heat loss occurs through the roof. When you heat to maximum but the upstairs rooms seem to stay cold, this is a sign that your attic is poorly insulated.

By properly insulating an attic that is not insulated at all, or by adding insulation to your current insulation, hot air leaks will be eliminated and no cold air entry will be possible. In winter, your home will be insulated from the cold while in summer, the heat will remain outside. You will also enjoy good savings on heating and air-conditioning costs.

In addition, a cold, poorly ventilated and humid attic can cause condensation to form on your ceilings due to the thermal shock between the hot rooms and the cold ceiling. Mold can even appear and cause breathing problems, as well as damaging the ceilings!
